What about Ananias and
Sapphira?
There
are instances in the Bible where individuals that were not
covered by the new contract felt wrath or even death for
their opposition of the gospel. The key point here is that
they were not in covenant (contract) with God. It may appear
to us that they were, but by definition they couldn’t have
been because they fell at the hand of God. Under the new
contract, if you are a member, you receive grace. Note again
we only see this for those that were opposing the movement
of God.
Paul struck Elymas, the sorcerer, with blindness because he
was opposing God’s church. Ananias and Sapphira were
scheming and deceiving God’s church and were struck down
(Acts 5). Herod was opposing God’s church. He had James put
to death by the sword and was planning on killing Peter too.
Herod was given an opportunity to acknowledge God and
refused to do so. This was, apparently, the last straw and
the wrath of God fell on him, as well.
Acts 12:21
21On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat
on his throne and delivered a public address to the people.
22They shouted, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man."
23Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an
angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms
and died.
Just because you come against God’s church doesn’t
necessarily mean you will receive the wrath of God – but you
might. The lesson to be learned here is: Don’t mess with
God’s church.
